Is Thailand a Good Place to Retire?

Retirees enjoy the colorful sights of Thailand

Retiring in Thailand can be one of the best decisions of your life. The country offers:

  • Warm, mild weather
  • A low cost of living
  • Excellent, inexpensive healthcare
  • Great culture and friendly people
  • Delicious cuisine

However, a life-altering move to a new country requires an adjustment period. We’ll tell you what you need to do soon after arriving in Thailand and give you some tips to make life easier while getting used to your new home. Setting up a Wise account can make it easy to transfer funds from your home to Thailand. Wise now operates in Thailand, and the transfer fees are just 1.5%.

Applying for a Retirement Visa

The first step in successfully retiring to Thailand is getting the proper visa. If you’re over 50, you may qualify for a retirement visa. The financial requirements are to have at least an annual balance of THB 800,000 in a Thai bank account or to submit proof of at least THB 65,000 in monthly income.

Having the retirement visa enables you to obtain a driver’s license and buy a condominium. You’ll be required to report to the immigration department every 90 days, but this can be done online. You can apply for the retirement visa from your home country or in Thailand after you’ve arrived on a tourist visa.

Getting Around in Thailand

You must obtain a Thai driver’s license to drive in Thailand legally with a retirement visa. Foreign driver’s licenses or International Driving Permits are not valid beyond 90 days after your arrival in Thailand. If you’re using any driver’s license besides a Thai license, be sure to also carry your passport with you. A valid driver’s license is also a requirement to be covered by insurance if you’re involved in an accident in Thailand.

To obtain a driver’s license, bring your passport, retirement visa, proof of residency, and a medical certificate, which can be easily obtained at any clinic or hospital, to the Department of Land Transport. Department staff will lead you through the tests you must pass to be licensed, and you can request English language tests. You’ll also be required to complete a short road test.

For non-drivers, every major city has a public transit system consisting of taxis, moto-taxis, songthaews, tuk-tuks, and rail systems. Public buses and trains travel between Thailand’s cities and towns. It can be a great way to see the country.

Retirement can include exciting travel in Thailand

Popular Places to Live

The next big question is where to retire in Thailand. The most popular areas for retirees include Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Koh Samui, and Phuket. These areas have well-developed infrastructure and offer the best entertainment, shopping and healthcare options. These areas also have convenient international airports for visiting relatives and friends. Foreigners can also buy their own condos free and clear in Thailand.

One tip on how to retire successfully in Thailand is not to isolate yourself from the pleasures you enjoy and are used to. Try to live as comfortably as possible.

Retiring successfully also means cultivating an exciting new social life, making valuable friendships, and taking up new hobbies and pastimes to enjoy with friends and loved ones.
